Honoring Genie: A Heartfelt Cat Celebration of Life in San Francisco
As a documentary family photographer in San Francisco, I recently had the privilege of documenting precious moments with Genie, a beloved feline experiencing chronic health issues. Meeting Genie and her warm, engaging pawrents highlighted the importance of my specialized end-of-life pet photography sessions, which offer pawrents a compassionate way to preserve memories of their furry soulmates during their final days.
Genie's Story
Genie, a beautiful cat with soulful and expressive eyes, has been her family's faithful companion for over four years. In 2020, smitten by a photo posted by a local rescue shelter of an adorable cat (hint: Genie!), Genie’s parents submitted their application, interviewed via Zoom, and welcomed Genie home. Genie’s health improved throughout the years thanks to the incredible love and nourishing environment her pawrents co-created for their beloved. As her health began to decline in her 14th year, Genie's pawrents reached out to me, wanting to capture the essence of their bond and Genie's unique personality.
The Photography Session
We held the session in Genie's home, where she felt most comfortable. Before I unpacked my camera, I introduced myself to Genie’s pawrents and Genie. We had chatted by phone the day before, but speaking in person to connect, reiterate the process, and address any lingering questions is important in creating a space where everyone feels safe and open to sharing their home during an incredibly tender time with a new person, like a photographer.
With a gentle approach, I documented tender moments between Genie and her family:
